Sake, of course, is the national rice wine. In this collection is a large wooden tub that contained many liters of sake. The Collection also contains large ceramic kegs used to dispense sake into smaller sake bottles (the size of wine bottles). These sake bottles are prime sources for artistic creativity, as is seen below. In lieu of sake bottles to distribute wine to guests are sake ewers, makie-e-covered lacquer pitchers (the size of beer-pitchers) for poring sake into individual serving-size ceramic cups (see below), and sake bowls (see under lacquerware). Bowls and cups are also primary vehicles for creativity, the former for ceramic innovations, the latter often featuring some of the finest small-scale makie-e.
